Some of My Best Poems

Just Because
(This poem was picked to be published in an anthology of children's poetry in Fall, 2001)
Just because I'm in a wheelchair
I don't go out at recess
I don't play soccer
I don't stand up when I say the Pledge of Allegiance
Just because I'm in a wheelchair
People still think I'm funny
People still think I'm a good kid
People still treat me like everyone else
Just because I'm in a wheelchair
I can still do fun things
I can still beat you at chess
I can still make you laugh
Just because I'm in a wheelchair…
… doesn't mean I'm not a regular kid.

Everyone Is Different
Everyone is different,
Everyone I know.
Everyone is different.
I think that is so.

Everyone is different,
Just like you and me.
So I'm just like everyone
Because no one's just like me!

I Don't Understand
I don't understand
why cats don't like to swim
why dogs chase cats
why I go to school

But most of all
why I can't walk.

I DO understand
why I am a good bowler
why fish can swim
why my Mom likes chocolate!!!

Someday
SOMEDAY...
Someday I want to have a job
Someday I want to have a house
Someday I want to be married
Someday I want to have six kids
Someday I want to be an artist or a singer
Someday I want to be famous
Someday I want to go back to visit Vietnam
Someday I want to wish on a star and wake up a princess
SOMEDAY...

Klutzy
Klutzy is black and blue.
It tastes like black and blueberries!
It smells like sweat
And it looks ridiculous.
It sounds like CRASH, BOOM, BANG.
Klutzy makes me feel embarrassed.

My Secret Friend
Colorful metal cover
Holding my dreams for tomorrow
Kept in a private place.
If you came alive tonight
After I turned off the lights
Where would you go?
Who would you tell?
You might run to Mom
And share my secrets,
Or run to Jesse.
NO! You wouldn't, would you?
Oh, Diary, I wish the dreams you hold
Could all come true.
But for now, I'll keep wishing --
And writing in you.

Nintendo
Playing, flying, dying
Mario
Slowly
Sank
Off my screen

Preteen
Wish, Dream, Sigh
Staring at the ceiling,
I lie in bed.
